RAPID UK is standing down a rescue team that was on standby for the massive Chilean earthquake.

Within minutes of the earthquake, RAPID UK received an alert and started to gather information. A rescue team was alerted at 0930 and preparations made to fly out to Chile.

Throughout the day, RAPID UK gathered information, such as the type of buildings and the route to gain entry into the affected area. Contact was made with people in the affected area to gain eyewitness accounts of damage and people affected. RAPID UK would like to thank everyone who provided assistance in this period.

An offer of assistance was provided to the Chilean ambassador to the UK, while RAPID UK liaised with Defensa Civil in Chile and RAPID Latino America (RAPID UK’s sister organisation based in Peru).

At present, the Chilean emergency services are dealing with the disaster and have not asked for international assistance. RAPID UK is therefore standing down its team.

RAPID UK is a charity, which operates international search and rescue work with no government funding. In addition to disaster response, the organisation works in disaster-prone areas throughout the world to train and prepare local teams.
